This is such an easy and fun art project to do with kids: even the big kids like this one. We get out the hotplate or warming tray, cover it with aluminum foil, then once it is heated up, we put our paper on the hotplate and color on it with wax crayons. Some of the kids like to leave the crayons on the paper until they totally melt into a lava effect of oozing wax, often blending into beautiful colors in the process. Others like to slide the crayon around on the sheet of paper since it is so liquidy and easy to navigate into pretty designs or abstract bits of color. I first got the idea from The Artful Parent, one of the best blogs for kids art available. Because the paper and the wax and the hotplate can get very hot, I am careful to offer close supervision with the littles on this project.
Kids really are the best artists: they are so carefree. They believe in their artistic abilities. They do not worry about spills or messes or mistakes. They live in the moment. They feel proud of their colorful accomplishments. They want to share their creations with others. This is an art project that always feels like a success once the wax is dried and the bright color prevails...
