San Xavier del Bac

The children surprised me by how much they enjoyed touring the San Xavier del Bac Mission during our recent trip to Tucson. If you look closely in the above photo, you can see two of my little ones entering a pew in the Mission sanctuary. Miss C impressed the most with her ubiquitous genuflecting and signs of the cross---behavior which prompted other onlookers (see far back of photo) to comment on the impressive reverence and respectfulness of such little children. C received so much positive attention that she began genuflecting in all kinds of unlikely places: before sitting down to eat at restaurants; before getting on the elevator in the hotel lobby; and before entering our seats on the airplane. I will do better on teaching her the importance of context, but in the meantime, I am very impressed with her deferential temperament and her fine coordination (this genuflecting business is not easy!). The boys were such wonderful big brothers to their little sister during our whole trip, and all of their curiosity, enthusiasm, and endless energy made traveling so much fun…
