Christmas in Harvard Square

While a student in Cambridge, Mass., I aimed for the 11am Sunday Mass in order to hear the angelic voices of the boys from the St. Paul's Choir School. Their reverence as they processed into the church---accompanied by organ music, candles, and incense---set the tone for the rest of the Mass as we genuflected, kneeled, and sang hymns of praise to our God and King. For years after, I sought to find recordings or Youtube clips of these talented musicians, and only this year have they finally recorded an album, "Christmas in Harvard Square"(now available through iTunes). Our family has been listening to this CD for weeks now in preparation for the arrival of the Christ child. My favorite is the "O Magnum Mysterium" arranged by da Vittoria---these boys truly do sing with the angels.

On a more comical note, I long have had visions that James or Thomas might earn a spot at this famous Boston school---although based on James's performance at the Christmas pageant last Tuesday night, this is a far-fetched aspiration. (For the last song he stood with his back facing the audience…to which some friends in the audience commented that James probably likes math more than music, perhaps?) We'll wait and see what kind of musical talents Thomas has... God bless you St. Paul's Choir School! And Happy Advent dear friends out there in the world!
