As a middle and high schooler in rural Iowa, my class would take field trips to the big DSM, often stopping at the Des Moines Art Center for a brief introduction to a culture other than agriculture. Viewing the Cindy Shermans, the Roy Liechtenstein, the Rothko, the Jasper Johns, the Matisse, and the other colorful modernist artworks always left a deep impression on my impressionable self. I didn't realize how impressive the Des Moines Art Center's collection was/is until I moved away and started touring other regional art museums and collections. The airy building (designed in part by I. M. Pei), the wide-ranging traveling exhibitions, and the permanent collection alike are some of the best displays of (post)modernist art today, and I'm fortunate to have been introduced to the Des Moines Art Center at such an early age. Hooray for good art in such unexpected places!
